The breeding season for the Scops Owl is September to November so they are probobly still in the area but away from the "public section" of Afsaal
Nests in a natural hole in a tree and usually 3 eggs are in the clutch (info from Roberts Birds of Southern Africa)

We had lunch at Afsaal on Friday 27 Aug and the owl was there, just in a different tree than usual. The Windhoek draught man told us where to look, buy a beer and ask him.....

I think the owl does go AWOL every now and then, in fact when we were there this June there was a sign in front of the tree stating he was away taking his children on holiday!
I am sure he will be back.

The Management at Afsaal need to take a serious look at their relationship with the public and the manner in which they speak to people. We will personally never patronise either the shop or the take away again after recent events which involved us personally. We will also be taking the entire matter up with Sanparks.

Sorry for you that you had these bad experiences Penny :(
I have been to Afsaal many times and none of the staff ever gave me any reasons for complaints :)

Afsaal has had many challenges. This is not to defend any bad behaviour.

I do think that the alcohol ban has created a lot of strain, probably had a bad cut on profits.

I noticed that they were trying to make up on Tshokwane's example. They were serving venison rolls and being tummy friendly.

I also noted the manager, well he was grumpy and seemed to have a mission. I think that he has fallen in love with Scopsie.

I think that I can forgive that sin. I must say, I only dared take 2 pics

Afsaal is a no-no for us. We also had a "bad" experience there 3 years ago, I complained to the manager and also to SANparks. Firstly if I am spending money at your establishment I expect common courtesy and secondly Afsaal is always too busy and sometimes even chaotic for our liking, just my opinion

Hi Tent Dweller :D

I do think that Afsaal would never have survived if they had to rely on customer care. It is because there is a constantly changing tourist stream that they have managed for so long.

The alcohol ban does however seem to have made a big difference. I was there on the 31st December and could not believe how "quiet" it was given the date. When I say quiet, there were many people, mostly families, but there was still plently of space for braaing.

I had a toasted bacon and egg sandwich, (my cholestrol goes to hell in Kruger ) and I did not have to wait long at all. In the past I would have prepared myself for a looong delay.

I did have some sympathy for the manager, because he does seem to have Scopsie's well being at heart. I also agree though that there are ways of setting boundries that are not offensive.

There are signs on the verandah advertising Amarula coffee at Afsaal. So much for the ban on alcohol. I personally think that places like Nkhulu, Tshokwane and Afsaal have lost major revenue from the rule that is preventing them from selling alocohol. If there were as many staff patrolling the roads, checking on speeding and people breaking rules, feeding the animals, as there are at entrance gates ,searching vehicles for booze, some kind of a balance might be found.

There is absolutely NO excuse for foul mouthed people believing that they are in a position of power and using this power in a misguided way. No thanks - in future they will be boycotted!

MM, you can't drop a clanger like that then leave us hanging! ?????

I personally have always had pleasant service at Afsaal. It is often busier than I would like but their food is always tasty. I enjoy their selection of food too.

I saw Scopsie there in October 2010. He wasn't in his usual tree tho'. He was in the one to the left, if your back is to the take away counter.

I have been assured that my e mail has been referred to the correct people and hopefully, as promised, I will have some kind of explanation/apology (NOT generic) within the next 2 weeks!

Such a pity that there should be complaints, Afsaal is such a lovely place. If only one can understand how someone can be rude to another person, especially to a client.. wow  Unacceptable.

Have not encounted rudeness or bad behaviour at Afsaal. If it is very busy we wait a bit until we can get a table.
