Thanks for the advice. I did specify that I was mobility impaired when I booked. The person wouldn't tell me what number unit was assigned. I can use either stairs if there is a hand rail and they are not too steep or a ramp if there is a hand rail. I do battle to walk even short distances though.

I feel mean about taking a four bed unit when I will be alone, especially in peak season.

Hi all,

I am newly married and planning to introduce the in-laws to Kruger in December.

I have not been to Kruger in December yet, how are the sightings around Letaba that time of year?

Thanks tent dweller.

So far the decision seems really close between Letaba and Olifants for the December trip.

Hi 11ie.

In Dropbox, right-click on the photo, select "Share Photo...", click on the "Get Link" button and you should see a link that starts "https://".

Copy that link and copy it in your post. Unfortunately I can't get a photo to embed but you should be able to post a link.

We'll be in one of the guest houses. You'll spot our Vito with the yellow ribbon and 7 big guys from 12 to 76 years old with bins clapped to our eyes most of the time.

4 weeks for us (+/-) to Letaba. Bushbuck grazing around us in camp, squirrels hurtling about on there urgent missions, vervet monkeys destroying the peace, ahhhhhhhhhhhh bring it on!!

Letaba also has the Engelhard Dam just across the river which is huge and always guaranteed to produce excellent water orientated sightings (ducks, hippos, crocs, terrapins, you name it). Our best sightings of klipspringers ever were literally JUST outside the hide.

I'm not selling Olifants short as it has the most astonishing view, but I just prefer further north even if it is only by a little bit :)

Ok. A quick report back on the mobility challenged access issue at Letaba. I was given unit no 20 despite telephone calls to the camp to explain my situation in the light of advice given here. The safari tent is accessible, but the toilets are about 50 metres or more away and over stony uneven ground. This was made worse on day one by a fire hydrant accident which left the area very muddy. The last two days it rained and mud was again a problem.

I was very unhappy about access to the ablutions, especially as I twice phoned and asked to be placed closer to the ablution block. I had no alternative but to be driven to the ablution facilities, which is somewhat humiliating when one is requesting this for the third or fourth time in a night. Despite requesting that a plastic chair be placed there for me to use in the showers this was not done which meant I needed to cart heavy furniture around from the baths to the showers, and then to the hand basins. A light plastic chair would have helped tremendously.

If someone is planning to drive to the ablution blocks anyway and doesn't need to go to the toilet several times during the night, the safari tent which is unit 20 is perfectly suitable, but you may need to ask them to brush the leaves and branches off the top of the tent. This caused leakage despite the three layers of non-porous material at the top when it rained down heavily on the 26th.

My travelling companion was generally very impressed with Letaba and its cleanliness. I mention this because my annoyance at the distance of the unit to the ablution block soured my outlook and made me grumpy. I do admit that I would definitely try to get unit 8 next time (and there will probably be a next time).

Unit 20 is right at the edge of the safari tents and is pretty close to the river, making it an easy walk for me to enjoy the view. So there were some benefits. And en route I found a tree with two bush-babies. :D
