It was extremely hot in Letaba over the past weekend and even the resident bushbuck hid in the shade. This little one was really cute.

Matambeni bird hide (on Letaba River) taken from a loop off the S46.
A really productive spot. Lots of waterbirds, hippos, crocs and other game that come to drink along the river as well as a really beautiful setting.

The overcast sky in the pic did not bring any rain with it......

I took this pic last year in Kruger and can't remember where
Who can tell me with absolute certainty where it is and which one it is?

Believe that the elephant museum is going to look super with all the new improvements. The elephant which was terrorizing so many people near Croc Bridge and was taken out, his skeleton is going to be mounted in the meseum as well as Mandleve's tusks. Should make for some interesting viewing in the new museum.

That one went missing to, so here is the text of the fronpage of the site:

Date: 2006-02-08

The Elephant Hall at Letaba Main Camp in the Kruger National Park (KNP) is in the process of receiving a face-lift and will be closed for the next few weeks.

At present, the Letaba Elephant Hall houses the skulls and ivory of six of the original seven of the KNP's legendary Magnificent Seven elephants, as well as displays on how elephants evolved as a species.

We would like to make this facility even better, said Mr Ben van Eeden, the regional manager for the Northern Business Unit, but it has become necessary to close the hall for at least a month while work is in progress.

Apart from a new coat of paint and general maintenance, the Hall will receive the tusks of Mandleve, the largest ivory-carrying elephant yet recorded in the KNP. He died of natural causes in 1993, and a full elephant skeleton. Added to this is the introduction of large murals, which were prepared especially for the hall.

We realise that many of our guests that visit Letaba during February will be disappointed not to see this facility, but would like to assure that the new-look Hall will be much better than the present one, added Mr Van Eeden.

Rotary International sponsored funding to make the Mandleve tusk display and the Bushveld Region Honorary Rangers provided the funding for the full elephant skeleton display.

The Hall will be re-opened to the public by the beginning of March.

Does anyone know which units numbers are in the category BD3U (perimeter bungalow with 3 beds and kitchen).
There are 20 units in that category. I had a look at the Letaba map and some of them must be quite far from the fence. :?

Hi Katja

I won’t be able to help with your specific request but we normally stay in the D-group of units. We book for 2, with kitchen and perimeter view. In Letaba most of the bungalows are not real close to the fence and the only once where you will be able to actually see the river bank is maybe the group next to the restaurant (32-37) although 59-64 seems close to the fence on the map there are a lot of trees in the way blocking the view to the river but with lots of birds and squirrels

I have not yet found a bungalow in the D-group with 3 beds maybe they are the ones in C-group. In C-group only no 17 will have some sort of view of the river as the other looks towards a little side channel and are set some way from the fence. BUt then again 17-22 are close to the restuarant and movie arena with lots of movement

We prefer D-group
