The boardwalk facility at the Skukuza nursery has recently been completed. I experienced the magic of the boardwalk first-hand late last month when, on advice from forum members, the nursery was included in my bird-watching schedule. In the end time was the greatest factor in spoiling our fun - we had to book in at Olifants that evening and we had to curtail a superb morning's birding prematurely.

For anyone interested in birding, the boardwalk is a must - and you get to stretch your legs at the same time!

The boardwalk forms the border between the golf course and the nursery and runs along a streambed. Weavers, spurfowl, guineafowl, ibis, batis, puffbacks, scrub-robin, robin-chat, thrushes, birds of prey (seen overhead), swallows, swifts, martins, sparrows, bulbuls, buntings, white-eyes, louries and flycatchers, to name but what I can remember with this dinky memory after three weeks of hectic office interruptions!

And then there are the indigenous plants, some of which were in full bloom. Gee! We have some of the most beautiful blooms in the WORLD!

I will certainly put more time aside with my next visit; I could probably combine Lake Panic and the nursery, perhaps a whole day excursion!

So glad to see that the boardwalk is living up to its expectations and that you had an interesting visit, especially bird wise Johan.
Did you see any animals there at all? Maybe still a bit nervous after the construction process.
Thanks for posting. :D

Elsa, I tend to put on the blinkers at bit when it comes to birding. But I do remember having to ask some baboons nicely to make way as they were having a sit-in at the start of the boardwalk (didn't find out what their issue(s) was/were...). Also spotted some Impala.

When birding one tends to spot stuff like lizzards and insects too. But I imagine you were referring to the bigger stuff...

Hi Johan, thanks for the reply, I was just curious as to whether you had seen any animals really, big or small, no real preference.
But it sounded like you got some great birds sightings tho.
I am more of an all rounder when it comes to game viewing.

I walked the first 30 odd meter last month (time was also a factor) and it looked great. I'm staying at Skukuza in Dec and will def do the whole walk. I can imagine the birds must be exellent.
