Road conditions (surface) was fine last time I towed (from Hazyview to Orpen).
The road is busy, and travel through the Bushbuckridge area is bound to be pedestrian in nature (pun intended).
One word of warning: be very aware of the speed-bumps in Bushbuckridge...they sneak up on you!

Hi Tieroog,

I didn't tow anything, but travelled that road in July. Pleasantly surprised at how "good' it was, especially compared to the Whiteriver-Numbi road.
A few heavy trucks slowed us down on the uphills, but otherwise fine. Worst potholes were the last 5 km from Orpen just before the T-junction on the Hoedspruit/Hazyview road.
Enjoy your trip.

God bless,

Friedrich,
Are you saying that the R531 road from Orpen gate is pot holed?
We will be driving from Satara (exit Orpen gate) to Hoedespruit Airport (HDS).

Hi CTM7943

The road from Orpen is a very good, wide road, slightly bouncy now and then (if you are towing something), with only 2 patches of potholes that I can remember -- 1 patch was quite bad so that it was better to drive on the wrong side of the road for about 40m... still a very good road!
I did it about 4 times in a week as I am planning to retire in Hoedspruit and have just bought a property there.
Enjoy your holiday!

Thanks Friedrich,
Hopefully I will spot that bad patch before it is too late
We will be driving that road to return a rental car to HDS, don't want to have to report damage.

Thanks Albert and Friedrich

We towed our caravan and it was really not bad. One has to be on the look out for cattle and slow trucks, but the trucks often move over to allow vehicles to pass.

If you do not want to spend too much time travelling in the park on the way home, this is an alternative that could be considered.
