Giraffe Orpen Cam 06/06/2015

Unread postby Elaine.E » Sat Jun 06, 2015 3:41 pm

Hi, UK newbie to these forums (although not to KNP). I haven't figured out how to screenshot/post photos yet, but there's a giraffe stuck in the Orpen waterhole. Has been there on it's side for at least 20 minutes, struggles to get up every couple of minutes but is unable to. I'm not sure if it's exhausted or injured.

Hi Elaine and welcome. I'm also watching that poor giraffe. I'm afraid I can't help you with posting pictures but there was a giraffe in the waterhole once before and it eventually managed to get out on its own. Holding thumbs for this one.

Thanks for the welcome. Looks a bit more promising now. At least it's not flat on it's side any more, but it can't seem to stand up.

I've been watching on the live feed - poor guy has tried numerous times to get up but keeps falling.
I tried calling the camp but the number stays engaged.
Doesn't seem to have any flailing legs indicating fractures...

I can't see any signs of injury either but seems to be front left leg that can't support weight. Fingers crossed here in Belgium too! (Just joined the forum after years of regular visits to the webcams since last visit to KNP in 2010.)

Hi! Also only joined this afternoon! as giraffe get older their markings also get darker so it seems this one is quite old and possibly a bit weaker. I think it is struggling to gain traction on the cement floor of the water hole. Lets hope it gets out before dark fall before predators start moving.

Lesley Nyawo : We have reported the incident to the coporal and he and his other colleagues will remedy the situation as soon as possible. This requires a bit of planning and consultation with the Section Ranger. The Giraffe may be a danger to the Rangers and Corporal, hence we need let the giraffe to calm down to rescue it with very less danger to the rescue team.

I think the giraffe may have died just before the webcam went down a while ago. I'd been watching on the live feed and it was no longer attempting to raise it's head above water and I couldn't see it breathing.

I thought the same as could not see any breathing and water surface totally still for a good few minutes - then was glad to see it moving again - now it's totally still again - hope help gets to it in time...
