2 winter visits and now a summer visit.

WOW was it HOT

Bush Baptist's (BB) advice re wet towel around the neck did not work as the cold water was as hot as me

But thanks BB the zip locked face cloth in the freezer overnight and then in the cooler box was magic

Our first significant sighting was a blue land cruiser with roof top tent and yellow ribbons (karate belts) on both mirrors......Pikasso and Vahine....and they were watching.....later...

'Mites met
Pikasso and Vahine
LR3
Jo
quannah
Gariep and Tilla Lotter (can't find your names)

also many friendly visitors who knew what the yellow ribbons were about but were not (yet) members but who browsed the forums.

First a visit to Augrabies Falls.
8 Feb 2010, probably close to the peek of the flood.

A quick shop in Upington and we were off for KK.......

The gate guard asked why we had tied yellow ribbons to the mirrors.......he had seen many visitors do so  ...and now he knows why

Neither the rocky outcrop nor Samevloeing WH produced a leopard (again.....)

The dune road did provide the icon

Image

and the inevitable korhaan in a sea of different coloured flowers

Image

bee eaters unfortunately on the wrong side of the sun

Image

and then barely 30 min into KTP and shortly after entering the Auob river the first significant sighting of the trip.....

A blue Land Cruiser with roof top tent and yellow ribbons on the mirrors parked on the right hand side of the road......

Pikasso and vahine    ....and they were watching

Image

Cheetah    across the river under a tree

4 of them, 2 collared

They were soon on the move ....stalking along the opposite ridge.....something we learned of cheetah on this trip they are very patient hunters and stalk from miles away

Image

notice how green the shrubs are!

Image

Image

Image

4 in 1 (see no4 on the ridge?

Image

Their intended prey??

Image

With that we moved on to see something else with the intention of coming back....but time and wanting to settle in and get frozen items into a freezer, we unfortunately did not return

The Cats Tail was in full bloom

Image

We headed for Monro WH where we heard there were a pride of lions.
Unfortunately only the male was there, just off the road. Saddly he did not look healthy. Others who saw him later also thought so.

Image

He certainly needed a dentist.

Image

Birds we were to see a lot of....

Image

Image

The first of many young BBJ...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Just short of KK this pair were in the road.

KK from the BBJs

I was woken up at 7H00 with a knocking on the door....

Willem....theres a leopard at the WH

Called SO who was still asleep, grabbed cameras etc.....rushed onto the deck....

Image

Image

He moved to the side on of WH, under cover of the bush on the front, and that was the last we saw of him......

SO asked how I knew I should look at the WH.... I told her Willem had knocked at the door....oh....we obviously needed the sleep, first morning on holiday and all....

When we left Willem told us that the leopard had come up the dune past his tent, crossed the road, crossed the veld and then crossed the road and went up the dune.

The other guests had gone to his tent and then their vehicle and had a great close encounter...

oh well...

Willem thought we would come to his tent...I thought the leopard was still at the WH...

Morning drive was towards Auob river, hopefully lions at Monro and cheetah at Houmoed..

Springbuck in a sea of green

Image

As we approached the Auob river intersection...who was heading for the same spot of road?...none other than vahine and Pikasso. On their last drive of their trip. A good chat , vahine proclaiming it their best visit ever....

We followed and would meet up at a significant sighting.....but none  and so our brief encounter ended...but we meet again here

The biggest tortoise we have seen in the wild, Kalahari tent tortoise?

Image

Different coloured flowers....

Image

First Wattled Starling that I have ever noticed

Image

Image

Image

We stopped to admire this herd of wildebeest, the guests in front of us thought it was the ideal time to have a smoke and leg stretch......

The driver was 3 meters in front of the vehicle with his door closed...
We spoke to them saying that anything could be behind the bushes behind him....

Image

Just around the corner, Monro lion had moved back a little..... the legstretchers arrived, inquired what we were looking at ...and response when he saw the lion showed that he had hopefully learned a lesson....just the dune between where he was standing and this hungry lion....
