Danie,

You must be getting tired of enquiries about the Nossob cam, but seriously, how long will it still take? I mean, c'mon, more than a month to replace a cable? I travel to the Kgalagadi at least twice a year, and the place is not really so remote that it warrants such a long turnaround time on a simple item such as a data cable.. SAA and SA Airlink fly into Upington daily, which is just a few hours drive from Twee Rivieren, and there is a continuous stream of vehicles (visitors who will glady carry a parcel) travelling daily from Twee Rivieren to Nossob. So, I really fail to understand this problem...

Hi Peter

Believe me, we are even more frustrated than you! I fully agree with you.

The company involved in replacing the cable (making up another cable and shipping it back to Nossob)) dragged their feet for several weeks. After some rather "serious" talks with them, they promised to have the cable back in Nossob very soon (I am waiting for the final date from them) but they verbally promised to have the cable made up by the end of last week/beginning of this week and ship it back to Nossob.

Will keep you updated!

Hi Danie
Thanks for the update!
Perhaps we should know what this company's name is? So we can NOT use them in future, or are they locked into a contract and that is why they do not care about the service they give?

JJ

It is over a month - The cable was removed on the 19th March, which I am sure you are well aware of?

I share your frustration. The same on this side! A bit of history:

The cable was taken from Nossob to Twee Rivieren with a lift and was shipped from Upington on 24 March 2010 14:40 (scanned) with an overnight courier service. It arrived in Johannesburg on 25 March 2010 23:26 (scanned in). The 1st notification was sent to the company (to whom the cable was addressed) on 25 March 2010 at 11:55.

To cut a looong story short, the cable was only fetched by the company from their post office on 22 April 2010 11:33  (that was after we really kicked up some dust!).

The details above I took directly from the track and trace facility of the courier service's website using the tracking number supplied to me by my colleague in Twee Rivieren who sent it via courier service.

So let's see if they will deliver as promised! Unfortunately I can't give you the company's name (for ethical reasons). If they slip up again, I might give a hint! :)

Good news on the Nossob webcam cable!

I received confirmation this afternoon that the cable (linking the wireless accesspoint to the external antenna in the camp) has been shipped back from Johannesburg/Midrand to Kgalagadi (Twee Rivieren) today. From Twee Rivieren it must go to Nossob and be installed which should be a quick job!

Hopefully this will resolve the problem of the bad signal between the webcam in the hide and the camp (Nossob) itself.

Hi Danie! :D

Nossob seems pretty stable today and I wonder if the cable might be fixed or if we are just very lucky with exceptionally good conditions for lots of ghost pics? :hmz:

Hi Lionspoon

The cable for the wireless link antenna did arrive at Twee Rivieren (+-170km south of Nossob) a day or two ago and it was sent to Nossob yesterday to be installed. My assumption is that yes, it was installed indeed!

I do not have word (yet) from my colleagues in Nossob about confirming this but all the signs are positive that it has indeed been successfully installed!

The ghost can not be so forgiving to have a stable connection for this length of time! :)

Danie, thanks again for your quick reply.

It really looks good regarding Nossob. The cam hasn't been up and running for such a consecutive period of time as it was today, so I think, we should be alright and I already say thanks to the Nossob team for fixing the cable as soon as possible for them!

Also, thanks a lot for investigating the ordeal journey of that said cable, Danie!

The antenna cable (to the antenna of the wireless link) reached Nossob on Thursday and it was installed. Now even the ghost is down! :( The fact that the webcam was stable on Wednesday was the ghost's contribution as the cable was not there yet.

Problems with the telephone system via satellite also makes it very difficult for the technical support guys on this side to give our colleague in Nossob telephonic guidance. They tried their best yesterday but no success so far. Where is cellular technology in the desert when one needs it? :)

The team will try again on Monday! Enjoy the other 3 cams for now!

Danie, thanks again for the update! :D

I guess, with the cam being down it's better that the cable isn't installed yet instead of cable being installed and cam down anyway.

Thanks to the Nossob team for working so hard anyway!

 The Nossob webcam is online again. Problems sorted out, cable installed correctly! Happy viewing! Thanks to the Nossob team and Marx!

Once again we are encountering obstacles with the webcams line upgrade.
:x

Please just bear with us... Once this is in place, the speed issues should be resolved for a long time to come.

It is great to have the cams working, but I need to ask if there is any reason why the cam is left in this position at night - It is on the furthest zoom out and it is virtually impossible to identify anything on the cam?
