Orpen webcam image quality improved - feedback

Unread postby Danie » Wed Nov 18, 2009 4:13 pm

We have a bit more bandwidth available at Orpen and I have increased the quality of the picture from Orpen a bit at 15:45 SAST. It will use a bit more bandwidth on your side from now on to download.

We have had requests to increase the quality of the images and at this stage we can do it at Orpen as there is a bit more bandwidth available.

For our viewers with slower connections we do apologise as the image from Orpen might refresh a bit slower but we have to move to the next level of bandwidth as it becomes available. I know that we have a lot of virtual visitors from South Africa with lower bandwidth for whom this will be slower but it will make some of our virtual visitors happier as bandwidth is not a problem for them.

The settings on the other two webcams (Nossob and Satara) have remained as is as we don't have more bandwidth available from the webcam site :(

Please give us feedback if you can 'see' an improvement in quality as I have brought down the JPEG compression on the images from the Orpen webcam.

What can also be done is to increase the physical dimensions (height and width) of the image you see coming from the webcam.

At the moment it is set to 384x288 and it can be increased. The impact of that is higher as the page layout will have to change (e.g. where you can see all 3 webcams on one page). This will also increase the size of the update of the new image with every refresh making it even slower for our viewers with slower connections.

Let's take the baby steps first for now.....
