I have seen 2 sightings at Satara webcam that I can not identify. Please help me with identification if you can. The first was at 20.13 on 11-04-09

The second was at 03.39 on 23-04-09

I would go for African Civet for number 2

I wouldn't have had a problem with the Aussies but there is a large variety at Kruger. Thanks Prings.

White-tailed mongoose is much smaller and only the tail is white.I would say Honey Badger and a Side-striped Jackal.

I still say white tailed mongoose. Reading the definition it is the largest mongoose in Africa achieving a length of 1 to 1.2 meters in length.

The Jackal could possibly be the Side-striped jackal, but it would be very difficult to distinguish with certainty from this photo. They are however less common than the BB in KNP.

No uncertainty about nr2. It is the White tailed mongoose.

The Jackal is difficult,but I still say Honey badger.I just googled white tailed mongoose and it has only a white tail the rest of the animal is brown to charcoal.I have a book 'signs of the wild' on page 75 there is a pic of a white tailed mongoose and if you have a map of Kruger the one with the lion on the front lying in a dirt road,at the back of it at the bottom left there is also a pic of one.The animal in the web cam has to much white!

Description from signs of the wild "It is darkish grey in colour with darker underparts and a white tip to the tail" the animal in the web cam has allot of white over the whole body except the under belly.

I am going to ask you to believe me ... its the mongoose.

I know both animals well ... and there is 0% uncertainty on this one. The overall white look is typical of this animal when seen under lights. Also the shaggy tail. It stands high on its legs, where the badgers is close to the ground. Looking at GISS (general image shape an size) it is clear that it is the mongoose.

The badger has clearly distinguished bands of black and white. A very typical and easily identified animal.

I have a few photos of the mongoose which I will try and dig up somehow. (Will take some time). They are not that good, since the mongoose is a nocturnal animal and don't like standing for photos!

Hi there

Those in the know can probably answer this one for me but I'm a newbie on the webcams. 5/6 July both evenings - antelope with very distinct facial markings - almost Sable like? Are they Sable - can someone tell me?
