Posting photos

There are plenty websites that will allow you to upload photos, but not all allow you to post those photos directly into a post here, or come with pop-ups, advertising etc.
Most of the people here use either Tinypic or Flickr, so a tutorial is handy. This one will be aimed at Tinypic, which is the handiest site to use for just a few pics, or webcam posts. People who want to write a tripreport are probably better off using Flickr, you can find the tutorial for that here.

Tinypic

You can find Tinypic here. Now you can go straight into uploading your photos, but after 3 months they'll be gone again! So rather create an account. Have a look at where you'll be:

(Your screen may show it a little wilder, with adds, but I always switch that off.)

In the upper right corner it says Join now!, hit the button. You get a page asking mail, password etc. Fill in a real email address, you get a confirmation mail if I remember correctly! (And get no spam from the site, so no problem.)
Log in, and your screen will look like this.

Note that you see Albums (6) in the top of this screenshot. Working with albums is easier, so create some. In the next screenshot you can see a "Create new album... »" link above my other albums, that's the one to create one, but the dropout menu next to "Upload to" lets you either upload to an album directly, or create a new album while uploading. Whichever you like best.
You can also see that I let one dropdown menu open. It offers you resizing options, but you are better off resizing first, as you know for sure then that the aspect ratio will be correct. The easiest way to do that is explained here.
Remember that 800 pixels on the longest side is the maximum here!

Now after you have resized your photos just hit the browse button, browse to where the photo is located, and click the Open button in the window.
Check that you are putting it in the proper album, and hit the Upload button. Your screen changes to

so you wait a bit, and it's replaced by something like this:

Well, that worked, it's uploaded!
Now all you need to do is go to the forums, reply or create a new topic, and paste the "IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards" into the post. (In the screenshot it's the black line.)

And that's all there is to it.

It worked, but we usually grab the photo from the webcam page, as it's a bit larger. The process is just the same though.

Are you saving the picture from the "higlights at bottom of page?
If you are, I find if I click on it first it makes it bigger like the webcam view, then you can save that one..MHO

I just realized that I don't know how to start a new thread.

I was going to post the early wildebeest at Nossob, but there wasn't already a thread for Nossob Oct. 15, so I didn't know how.

At the top, right next to the <postreply> button, to its left, there's a <newtopic> button. Or, if you're on the webcams forum page itself, only the <newtopic> button. Click that, remember to add a subject, and the rest is the same as posting a reply to an existing post. Have fun.

Help - I saved a post,(getting ready for tomorrow's DC) with the layout setup, but I want to retrieve it and edit it and don't know where it is?

Hi Empire,
Click on User Control Panel,
Then on Manage drafts
It suppose to open now drafts/post that you have saved,
Then in "Options", click load draft
Now it should open your saved post, you can edit it now and hit submit to post it......

I would like to know how cammers are able to post to the daily thread a sighting within seconds of it appearing on the cam?

Sometimes they are able to post 3 pics in succession and not even 30 secs has past?

Do they have ultra fast internet, many windows open at the same time? I feel like a dinosaur as I save the pic then upload it, then copy to Post a reply and then submit it.

Is there a shortcut as these 5 steps takes me at least 1 minute to do?

It's a combination of fast internet as well as having multiple Internet browsers open.

I use Mozilla Firefox to watch the cams and post the pics and i use internet explorer 7 to upload them onto tinypic
I may be different but not sure, i have three folders, one for each web cam, i save the pics and then upload onto tinypic

Don't worry after a few months you could be very quick

I really need help, I JUST cannot seem to post photos, I have read all the instructions, and I really get lost,,I get lost after resizing and I don't know where to look for it after that...

To upload photos..

First off..you need to be a member of a hosting site….like Tinypic..Flickr, Imageshack, Photobucket etc.
Then you need to UPLOAD the pics from your PC into your hosting site.
Once that is done you can then select the pics…pick the correct size & copy the code.
Open up a SANParks window, paste the code & highlight it. You will see a button above the message box [img] . Click on that…it should bracket the code.
Preview the post to see if it worked…then submit.

Please ensure that a photo is no larger than 150k. Keep the length of the longest side of the photo to 800pixels. Get resizing tips (both Tinypic & Flickr are easy to re-size…I have never used Imageshack.).


Re-Sizing

Filling trip reports with many pictures makes pages slow to open. People with slow connections will not be able to enjoy the report.
