I cut the video a little due to the fact that it was ten minutes long and you couldn't see much for alot of it......
I try my best and that's what matters I hope.

Great video! Interesting behaviour! Would love to have known what the situation was! Male / female, nomad or local, etc.

Truly special!

BTW why were you so out of breath? Need some exercise?

Wasn't me who was out of breath..... Was my father..... And yeah he does need a little exercise.......

Not sure to the sex.... But the one that did all the bitting was farely large.... Just smaller than a spotty........

The other one was alot smaller.........

Well if shadowdog is correct and it did happen the night before as well then i would guess they were local...... Nomad would most likely have left if he had that experience..... But then for all we know it could have been two seperate encounters...........

Other than that, i cant really give you any more info.....

We didn't see them arrive, my brother and I were at the entrance to the hide when we heard it all happen, so it basically all strated very quickly.......

Oh and when the one finally let go of the other one, they went and sat on opposite sides of the riverbed and tried to catch there breath.....

Also, the jackals decided to investigate and came very close to tasting some of the blood......

Hope that helps.........
I try my best and that's what matters I hope.

Nice Sighting man. Wow..
Good video that.
At the end of it all you don't want to go into the grave peacefully and quietly in well preserved body... You want to go sort off skidding in sideways, full of bruises and scratches saying: "Man what a ride!!!"

OK, with the limited information available ... a possible interpretation.

It seems obvious that it was a dominance behaviour, with the one animal exerting its dominance over the other. The way the one grabbed the other by the scruff, and not attacking its face, legs, etc. would in my opinion indicate that there were no intention of realy maiming the other.

Usually such severe behaviour is not necessary, since dominance has been asserted. But in this case it was, probably to establish dominance.

It is interesting that the attack was not continued, nor that the "looser" ran away. I would interpret that, as to mean that the two animals were not "enemies", but within the same social system.

Neck biting is the common way of establishing dominance, and usually occur at waterholes, where strange Brown Hyena meet. It also usually occur between animals of the same sex.

It is not possible to establish the sex of the animals. Unlike Spotted Hyena, male Brown Hyena tend to be larger than the females. I do have the suspicion that the smaller animal was a younger animal.

Brown Hyena live in clans. In the Kgalagadi the clans usually number around 15. There is some animosity between neighbouring clans. Territories are activley scent marked by pastings and they also use latrines as markers.

Reproduction occurs when nomad males visit the females of the clan. Resident males take no interest in mating, in this way inbreeding is prevented. Nomad males are usually redily accepted with very little animosity.
