Little trick which I use in such cases: Save the pic and open it in a little window, next to the webcam window. Then you can compare the pics.
In this case the have'nt moved in 14 minutes, so it's probably just mud sticking up.

Looks like fox to me. Could also be a mediumish cat, but for my bet I would say fox.

There is the back back visible. Never realised just how many jackel like creatures are around until I started visiting the cam. Are jackel mainly nocturnal?

Black-backed jackals are Diurnal and crepuscular on the whole but do become nocturnal around human habitation - they are very adaptable to their immediate environment and will take advantage of their own particular/unique circumstances in order to survive.

This can be observed in various Kruger camps, where you can often see the BBJ slipping between the huts/tents/bungalows at night, but in the more remote areas you will mostly see them in the early morning through to the early evening.

Thank you. They are very cute little critters. Looks a bit like my fox terrier. He also likes to get up in the night and very early morning. Maybe for different reasons though.
