Could this be brown hiena at Orpen? Note the even dark colour, white in the tail and neck and, if enlarged enough, the lighter color legs and pointed ears.

The animals also appeared in another frame but even less able to ID from that, first thoughts would have gone for bufalo but looking again may be hippo.
Hippo have been to the waterhole before now but that was duing a very dry period, it was quite an sight seeing hippo sitting in the waterole :lol:
Looking at the lead animals - size wise - shape - most likely buffalo.

How does one accurately distinguish between side-striped and black-backed jackals? Are there characteristics that leave no doubt?

I ask because I have seen a couple of jackal that are indeed smaller and have a less fuller face than expected from a side-striped, but there is no clear saddle-back. Do some immature black-backs have no saddles?
