Need an ID/behaviour explained?

Unread postby Zippy Zebra » Sat Aug 25, 2007 2:03 pm

There has been some question as to a spesific space to ask for ID's of animals or to have certain behaviour explained.

Maybe we could do that here...

Probably a mongoose.

I would hazard a guess at slender mongoose (diurnal, solitary, long and slender with thin long tail.

It is not only going to water that zebras walk in single file - it's a general habit whenever they are trekking anywhere. The females have a very strong hierarchy and each keeps strictly to it's place in the line and if one takes liberties it is soon shown the error of it's ways. Only the stallion walks wherever he pleases in the line although normally he acts as rear guard.

I'd go with that - due to the fact that there was only one and the dwarf and banded mongoose appears in groups - I'd go with the slender mongoose that is one of the species that appears solitary - but still a strange time of day to see it. The pic being so far -impossible to tell the colour but yes. I agree mongoose for me.

At least originally, that's what cam chit chat was intended for — to discuss and ask questions about what was being seen at the waterhole — and I see NO reason for that to change. So far as I understand, it is also still permissable to ask/give brief IDs in the sightings thread.

Yes it is and the intention is not to change it arks. The idea behind this topic is to post pictures of animals and then id them correctly so that can be used as a reference for people who watch the cam and wonder what animal might be at the waterholes. Having a topic like this one was suggested in the discussion around the polls.

If camwatchers have questions about animal behaviour I would urge them to also have a look at the Animal Forum. You can look up an animal with the index here: Animal Forum Index (the index is not complete yet)

Do feel free to ask what ever question you like in these threads as well. There are many foumites who will love to answer your questions. There's also a more general Animals Q & A thread where you could post a question, if you like.

There's a wealth of information to be found in the Animal Forum and the threads are great fun to read. Here's the zebra thread with a couple of very zippy pix in it. :D

Looks like a black backed jackal. Very common in KTP.

Looks like a Honey Badger to me...

Can't tell the size really, if it's bigger than that, I guess it could be a Civet.

But my first choice is Honey Badger.
