So due to me forgetting my old Apple ID password, I cannot transfer my Sasol E-bird app to my new iPad.

So I'm in the market for a new app, the Newman's interface looks quite decent, I have downloaded the lite version of Newman's and Sasol to compare. Robert's is just too much money for me at the moment, R500/R600.

So my choice is between Sasol and Newman's...what are your guys thoughts?

Go borrow what you need to make up the shortfall. You will enjoy the difference... like flying a kite vs a piloting a jet!

Like Johan said, you get what you pay for. Sasol and Newman's are both great reference guides with some extra feautures like keeping a life list etc.

Roberts is a whole multimedia package, with full detailed descriptions, birding area's reports, multiple list handling etc etc.

All depends on what you need.

Thanks for the replies guys. If I could afford the Robert's app I would definitely buy it. Maybe in the coming months.

I am very very new to birding and I just like to have an app that can help me identify what I am looking at.

For now I just want to know what people's experiences are with the Newman's and Sasol apps and which they feel is better/more informative as they both cost exactly the same amount of money.

I am not sure how many people actually use the apps, as from what I have read everyone has their books that they use.

I have used the Sasol app quite a lot on various devices and was happy with it. It is pretty much the book on a mobile device with some bird calls included.

I think you will be happy with either one :)

The general feeling is that unless you use an Ipad, the books are still better for the bigger images.....

thanks for all the responses guys.

I ended up going with the Sasol App. Mainly because the quality of the sketches/pictures looked a bit better and there were more available.

Hi Birders

SO and I are newish to Birding (no lists kept but a number of books) and new to Tablets - Android

Do we have to buy an app per tablets? (and what about pc's)
What happens to lists? hers/mine/ours?

Million dollar question which App? Roberts prices appear lower and Sasol appear higher than previous mentions.

You'll need an app per account, i.e. you buy apps on an account. You can have multiple devices on the same account.
No phone apps will work on PCs, and vice versa.

Not sure how best to manage multiple lists with a single app (Roberts might be able to, I don't have any experience with it).

I have both Roberts and Sasol for Android

Sasol has the ability to import and export to/from SD Card
Roberts has the ability to import and export to/from both SD Card and Google Drive

As Josh explained, If you buy the App, you can use it on multiple devices provided they are all configured to use the same Google account

We bought a tablet to share, and primarily for birding and run the Roberts on ours, tried and tested during our trip to KNP in March.

SO keeps the main list, and in Comments, I add my name for birds to be added to my list. There is a lot of scope for different lists.

We find sharing one app, and one tab, a nice way to bird together and do not need more.

One tip - Roberts is a very substantial app, and so we left all bird books at home. In hindsight we should have taken one bird book with, as we still need to page, and page, looking for 'that' bird.

Thanks DB, Phokojwe and Josh.
I bought the Sasol and loaded on both tablets.

We are now starting on blank lists.

Good luck RichardJ! I know the delight we get in building our lists. You will be surprised how quickly you will hit 100 birds. And do not think if you see a come dove, or sparrow you will leave it to tick later. Tick when you see it.
