I love these little guys. I took this at Shingwedzi, from the restaurant veranda. Check that tail

If I remember correctly, Jumbo reported a sighting of a Woodland Kingfisher in Brooklyn Pretoria last year. Well, on my way to work this morning I saw one in Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary (Brooklyn Pretoria).
Our offices are not far from the Sanctuary - would be great if I could hear it calling too! :D

I saw a Woodland Kingfisher yesterday in a tree in our backyard. He was eyeballing the hollow tree stump which the Blackcollared Barbets have abandoned 3 weeks ago after raising their chicks. Maybe he and the lady are moving in!

Herewith a photo and sorry about the poor quality:

Wow Theuns! It would be great if they did move in, I have them in my garden every day but they nest somewhere else.

Yes that would be great Sprocky, we are holding thumbs!

Thanks for your video DinkyBird. I'm a bit of a "Big 5" person and not much of a birder and I have always thought that sound was made by some sort of a dove! Now I know it's the Woodlands Kingfisher!

We saw this bird on the Mahonie Loop near Punda Maria in Feb this year and after much consultation between ourselves came to the ever hopeful conclusion that it was possibly a Mangrove Kingfisher, as the bill was not the full 2-tone black and red colour and it also looked greyer in the head and back region, but upon enquiring from the experts it seems it was a Woodie but one of the rarer type that don't have the dark bottom bill. 8)

Ndloti, I have not heard or seen one yet. As soon as I do I will post it here, as that will according to me be the official start of summer.
