Just got back last night from KNP. Nothing yet from Pafuri to Skukuza, not a peep. They are late  Roberts says they should be here from October to March, maybe they are also waiting for the rain. One of my most favorite calls in the bush.

Not really! According to Prime Origins guide to Best Birding in Kruger earliest arrivals are recorded on November 3th in 1978, 1986 and 1989. Average arrival date is given as November 11th.

I have never seen them before the 10th.

My first half-decent shot of this species. Up to now I've only had really bad ones.

We will be in Kruger from mid to end March - are we still going to see the woodland kingfisher then? Just love the call - brings back good memories from our trip there in January 2008, our first in the summer.

Hi Carolynn

My all-time favourite bird - hence my username! Last year, we had a Woodlands in our garden in Brooklyn, towards the end of March. I went ballistic!! May well have been a straggler, but I reckon you should still see some in Kruger then? Good luck!

You may all be very lucky. According to Roberts they are around until April.

So a lot of them 2 weeks ago, and after the 3rd day we didn't even notice them anymore as they were so common...
