Got a question for you birders out there. Saw a pair of fish eagles mating on Saturday. There was none of the normal nesting ritual to go with it. Not surprising as we are out of nesting season.

All the literature I have notes that this may happen with pairs that do not successfully breed in the previous season. However this pair did and have a juvenile that I have seen on the shore with them.

My question is, is this possibly not a reaffirmation of the pair bond now that the hard work of caring for young on the nest is over and more attention can be paid to each other and to reestablishing territory boundaries?

Friends that joined us in Olifants on 20 October also saw a pair of Fish Eagles mating …he actually took photos of the ritual…..so possibly it is not as uncommon for this time of the year ……or they were busy with team building for the world cup final.
I will ask him to post the photos.

identification Eagle

I have another bird in this case a raptor for identification
It seems clearly a fish eagle to me, but notice the black spots on it's chest, can anyone explain this to me please?
Is it maybe not complete mature yet?
I really am curious about this.

Hi Gregor
Looks like its not entirely mature yet. Have a look at http://www.kenyabirds.org.uk/f_eagle_flying.htm. It has the same kind of marking as the bird in your photo.

Yes, almost mature fish eagle.

Looks like a juvenile crowned eagle to me. They tend to be more darker than the ME. Also the crowned juvenile is rufousy and almost completely white in the head areas. Crowned juveniles have dark speckling on the flanks and legs, tail and underwing heavily barred. Crown more prominent? I think the experienced experts will have something different tho.

Hey, Nannie!

Definitely not Martial, and looks like a big bird, judging from the developed claws.

(Eliminating the weird variations of the hawk eagles...)

Have never seen a crowned eagle, but would agree with Mark!

Where was it!?
