I'd be interested to hear what people think of this bird's ID:

Seen in Mkhuze.

Cheers

Interesting pix... My first impression is that it is a young bird, black cuckooshrike. Apart from that I'll need to do lots of research to back up what my gut-feel is...

I'm keen to seen what other opinions come up

@Niall:
I'm not quite sure what to make of the first one. My first thoughts were Bushveld Pipit but those were just fleeting thoughts  , I think JvR might be closer to the truth.

Hi Anne-Marie,

First bird is a female Black Cuckooshrike - green & yellow markings on upperparts and barred underparts.

Great birds to see, both would be lifers for me, I'm very jealous!

Have a good weekend,

Barcud

I’m quite sure this is a Black Cuckooshrike…seen it this past weekend at our home in Marloth. What I’m a bit puzzled about is the lack of the white eyebrow. All my sources say the juvenile resembles the female…but can it be that the juvenile does not have such a distinctive white line above the eye?

Horrible photo, I know…all I was able to get :wall:

 Jumbo a female or juv, hard to tell, the eyebrow is not always that distinctive and probably why it is not mentioned as a id feature, the majority of this birds eyebrow is behind the branch in any case so not visible. on pg54 is pics of one posted by charming1 also without a strong eyebrow.

Thanks a lot, Wingman 8) …I also now had a look at a couple of other photos and realized that mostly the white above the eye is not nearly as distinctive as the sketch in Roberts, for example, shows

I saw this bird on the s30 (Salitje road) in KNP on 18-8-2010.
I think this is a female Black Cuckooshrike. Am I right?

Thanks! BB.
This bird was all alone, no male around.
I wonder if I would recognize the male, he looks like a Drongo.
