Hi Katja,

Second bird is an African Cuckoo - amount of yellow in the bill. European Cuckoo would have a darker bill.

Barcud.

Can one of the kind mites on this forum please confirm the identity of these birdies.

This bird was seen at Mestel Dam off the S3. A cuckoo of some sort I would guess.

Thanks so much.

The 3rd bird is a African Cuckoo.

Thanks so much. I am very new to birding and try to look them up, but sometimes it is all guess work. At least some of my guesses were right!

:hmz: And I can start ticking off my list!

I saw this one at Dalkeith and think it is a sub adult Shikra as it has the black throat stripe - Is it a Shikra??

Hi Duke, looks like African Cuckoo to me. The nostril area on the upper mandible is yellow so that probably rules out Common Cuckoo.

 a varocious caterpilar munching raptor of the african cuckoo variety

In flight they are quite easy to mistake for an accipiter, and they use this mimickry to avoid being mobbed by other birds when they do the nest parasite thing.
