Oz Gannet as seen on a West Coast island in the the West Coast National Park.
Notice the dark eye and shorter gular stripe on the throat.

It must be difficult to pick up one Auzzie bird out of a multitude Saffies!?

Well done!

Johan it was by pure fluke that we found Ozzie, considering that he/she is possibly the only one amongst 30000 Cape gannets.
We found it on the edge of the colony though. We think that it was systematicaly pushed out (alienated). We observed it for some time - it was not getting on too well with its neighbours.
I'm no expert so I don't know how an OZ gannet loner fits in.

Hi TonyT
do you have other clear pics of this bird from different angles it would be interesting to try and get the complete ring number and code to trace the ringing location

Another bird was sighted, bringing the numbers up to 2.

Is it possible that they could be more common that we think because they are so hard to spot? :hmz:

The very latest news, as per Westerncapebirding, is that there are 2 OZ Gannets plus a hybrid Cape X Australasian spotted on Malgas Island, Saldanha Bay.
@Wingman - we did get the ring number and have submitted it to Safring. We are awaiting a reply. I did a Google search but our number does not feature. Word is, unconfirmed, that this bird was ringed on Malgas by a UCT research guy.
