It appears to be a heavily streaked Karoo Long-billed Lark.

Larks continue to perplex me, here are two that I'm not sure about.

The second might be either a Karoo lark or even a red lark?

(Or perhaps I'm WAY off the mark and they're pipits ... :wall: )

Both seen at Karoo NP on 13 September 2011.

Thanks, Matt. Can anyone else confirm Karoo longbilled lark for my 2nd bird as that would be a lifer for me

While I have some doubts still about the 2nd bird posted here, I do think that the following pix are of a Karoo longbilled lark, seen right next to the tar road as I was departing Karoo NP on 14 September 2011.

Have I got it right this time?

Arks, the first bird on your second post is a Karoo longbilled Lark the grey on the nape and the rusty brown on the back and wings says it all.

Arks, your second bird is certainly a Karoo Long-billed Lark (as is the bird in your subsequent posting as you suggested)...

Trevor, thank you SO much for confirming my Karoo longbilled lark. It is a lifer for me!

I still find larks and pipits very difficult to ID. I really appreciate your help on this, because now, far away back home in Cambridge, I can study my photos (and I expect that I also have video of that 2nd Karoo longbilled lark, it was a very accomodating bird and gave me good photo opportunities, which many don't) and learn — and hope that I will be less perplexed with future sightings of these birds. To my (relatively) novice eyes, they do all still look so very similar in the field :wall: but over time, I'm beginning to find it a bit easier to work out which bird it might be from my photos — and attempting to solve these "puzzles" is always fascinating!

After my previous error, I am pleased to add the correct pix of the Karoo longbilled lark to the index. These were taken at Karoo National Park on 14 September 2011.
