I don't see a topic for this bird, so here's one that I saw on my stoep at MXNP on 14 September 2011. (The seed was there when I arrived, perhaps scattered by a previous visitor.)

If you like these birds then a great place to see them not too far from Darling is Olifantskop quarry in Langebaan. It is literally bursting with them.

I love these birds, infact starlings in general are my favourite family of birds. So intelligent, curious, and beautiful.

Did You Know? :hmz:
The colour of the iris can change depending on season, breeding, condition and age. The immature pied starling has a dark brown iris, which will become a pale whitish colour when mature.

Did You Know? :hmz:
Small round holes in earthbanks of less than 10 cm diameter are commonly excavated by nesting Pied Starlings.

Hi, I know this is going to be unfair, but this is all I got. Who is going to be brave enough to try and help, I dont know. This bird was photographed on a farm near Britstown. I managed to shoot 2 photos before it flew off without looking back. At home I saw the funny feathers on the top of the head, but I still have no clue. I scanned all my volumes of Bird Books. Appreciate any help.

Johan, I am going to shoot with an ID here, and I think it might be a Pied Starling, could possibly be something else but to me it looks like a Starling.

By gosh Hilda, ( THIS SHOULD HAVE READ DOT- DAN) I think you are correct. I found the Pale-winged Starling there as well and I had a look at the images of a Pied Starling in Roberts but could not find anything to show me that there might be some ruffling of feathers on the head. Now after your ID I had a look at various other images on web as well as in my SASOL Bird Guide and in SASOL a side view image (not drawing) give an indication of a feather ridge over the head. The 2 spots of white aroud the tail area did not make me believe that it was a Witgat. Tnx a lot I think you are correct.

Thanks for the compliment johanclassen but the compliment is due to DotDan! :D

I also had a look at the Pied Starling after DotDan identified your bird as one, and could clearly see the resemblance on the pictures on Roberts' Multimedia, but only after DotDan identified it.
