I spotted this hornbill in my backyard last week and tried to take a few photos. Can someone please tell me if it is a Trumpeter Hornbill or Silvery-Cheeked Hornbill? I personally think it’s a Silvery-Cheeked Hornbill but could it be? What is a Bird like this doing in the Vaal Triangle area. I live in Vereeniging. He was very inquisitive, especially when my car alarm went off. But flew away when a neigbour hooted. I was gardening when it came flying past me, it had a very load squawk and was large in size.

I am not a keen bird watcher but appreciate them in my garden. This was a nice experience, to see such a wild large bird around here.

See attached photos I took.

WOW!!! that is quite a sighting!

i agree it is a silvery-cheeked.

i would guess it is probably an aviary escapee, but birds do turn up in funny places occasionally.

ndloti - in Arcon Park! I suspected that it may escaped from Brandmillers Bird park which is close to my home or someones aviary. i've never been to Emerald Casino's Bird park so i don't know if it was from there.

It was definately aware (curious) that i was taking photos of it as came closer. I suspect its bad that its out, because it will not find a partner in this area? Do captive birds that escape do well when they escaped? - Feeding? :(

escaped birds often return to where they escaped from, so it may be recaptured.

some birds can do very well when they escape, like ringneck parakeets in jhb and durbs. i'd guess this bird would be able to find food in gauteng suburbs through summer now. winter could get a bit more difficult.....
