Mokala's Red Billed Oxpeckers

Unread postby Rooies » Thu May 28, 2015 9:23 pm

These fellas were re-introduced to Mokala during September 2012. Any news on how they are doing"? They are not listed in the pdf format of birds elsewhere on the forum.

I see Moesa was there 28 and 29 Nov 2014 ticked them off. At least they are surviving.

Hi Rooies,

The reply that I have received from SANParks PR through the Park Manager at Mokala is that the birds are doing quite well and is regularly seen in the park. Even farmers adjacent to the park contacted the park manager to get information about the birds nesting criteria to set up nesting sights for these birds.

Hope this shed some light on the current status of the birds.

Thanks Barry. We are always concerned about the status of the big cats that were brought back to Karoo an MZNP, but the Oxpeckers are just as important to the balance in the eco-system. Yet they get very little or no coverage.

Maybe it is us as users of the forums that only concentrate on the Big 5 etc. and don't ask questions like you did on the birds  .

I am a bird lover myself and must say that I was impressed by the quick and professional response received from the Park Manager at Mokala. The only reason it took some time to get an answer is the fact that my SANParks Communications Manager in the Arid Park region was in the Richtersveld Transfrontier Park on official business at the time that I did send through my request.
