Drakensberg Rock-jumper

Unread postby Bosnimf » Tue Jun 21, 2011 12:10 am

I saw the Drakensberg rockjumper for the first time on 24 April 2011, nr 718 for me! And now my favourite bird, it is absolutely beautiful. No picture can really capture the brilliance of it.

Image

Distribution: Eastern Cape from around Graaff-Reinet to Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg, mostly above 1000 m.
Status: Fairly common resident; some seasonal altitudinal movement at highest elevations in Lesotho.
Habitat: Steeper rocky slopes, low escarpments, tumbled scree, with grass and low shrubs or bushes.
Habits: Usually in pairs or family groups. Similar to Cape Rockjumper. Leaps from rock to rock, often with little wing action, but flies and glides well. Runs fast, sometimes with tail cocked. Wary and vocal when disturbed, especially near nest or young, running to and fro, disappearing and reappearing at different places.
Food: Insects.
There's never a reason to shout at someone unless they are in imminent danger!
