Hi stiffnecks, first of all, let me apologise for the poor quality of these pics. My mom is quite techno challenged and didn't know how to email them to me, so took pics of her PC screen ans texted them to me  (I will post better pics once I obtained the originals)

She saw this dove/pigeon in her garden in Wilro Park (Roodepoort, GP) and has (as do I) have no clue what it is. It doesn't seem to appear in any of the Southern African bird books, and resembles certain characteristics of a number of dove/pigeon species. Could it be a cross between two species, a mutation of a certain species, or what?

Any help in identifying this bird will be much appreciated.

Edit: Struggling to upload pics :wall: , see them here - http://flic.kr/p/jqYE2r and http://flic.kr/p/jqYEAH

Sheesh Ian.. Looks like a mixture of Lemon Dove, Rock Dove and perhaps a hint of Green Pigeon.

Sorry man, no idea, but I would guess it must be some form of hybrid between two species. Maybe some of the other birders could give more insight.

That is an escapee. :D

I recognised this one immediately from our trips to Burger's Zoo in Arnhem, Holland.

Here is a quote from Wikipedia:

"The Common Emerald Dove (Chalcophaps indica) is a pigeon which is a widespread resident breeding bird in the tropical and sub-tropical parts of the Indian Subcontinent and east through Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, to northern and eastern Australia. The dove is also known by the names of Green Dove and Green-winged pigeon. The Common Emerald Dove is the state bird of the Indian State of Tamil Nadu."

This thread is a perfect example of why both the Birds and the Stiffnecks forums should NOT be restricted to only birds seen in a SANPark. Here a member was helped with a mystery and we all have learned something.

If the proposed new Draconian rules are implemented, I -- and I expect many others -- will become far less active on the forum or even leave these forums completely. I doubt this is what SANParks would wish?

arks, you are quite right. It is one of the tremendous strengths of the Bird Forum (and the spin-off Stiffnecks bird club) to have a large audience of birders from all corners of the globe, many of them may be ducklings when it comes to SA birds, but most of the 'mites will be well versed in their native bird species.

This is, in my opinion, a near-unique feature for SA-based bird web sites, one that is not all that well understood or appreciated.

If we were to scrutinise the two forums for examples of what will suffer as a result of implementing the proposed rules onto the Stiffnecks Bird Club, you'll need quite a bit of paper... :rtm:

Anyhow, as I said earlier, let's start sweating once the petty stuff gets in the way. Much of the proposed "rules" is in place for the BF in anycase, but due to 'mites and moderators not "getting" the difference, this oversight caused the two forums to get mixed up. If I was the Headgirl, I'd also be worried about what my 'mites were up to on these two forums...

I have offered to help sort out the mess. So, please stop stirring a bit so that we can make out where the turds are floating!

I think the same thing has happened with the Photography and Camera Club Forums. There doesn't seem to be a clear distinction of what should be posted in each one.
(sorry to go a bit off topic here)
