Hi Bush Baptist, Sorry you didn't see any Carmine bee-eaters in the Kruger but I have been waiting over 10 years for my first sighting. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a small flock in early December last year (2009)

The were about 20 km north of Babalala picnic site.

Stunning pic bondm.

I have seen them on 3 trips to Kruger, (2 trips 1 bird each), the last in Dec 2007 and they were plentiful.

My favourite non-raptor.

Thanks BB.
Maybe you can tell me this:
Is this the season when you see them the most?
Normally we come to South Africa during the winter months and then you hardly notice them.

Hi Michel,

Nice pic. This is one that I've yet to catch up with. I thought they were Summer Visitors only, but on page 1 the write up by Francoisd says they are resident? Does that mean resident in the sub-region, and that Kruger's birds/ more southerly populations migrate North in winter?

They breed along the Okavango river & other northern parts From August and then come to Kruger in December until about March, then they are off again to I don't know where.

If you see one in winter you are very lucky. I saw one in April once.
