This raptor has me puzzled. I saw it soaring over Seeburg in West Coast NP on 3 December 2008. When I was watching it, I'd thought that it was a black harrier, but now, looking through my photos, I'm not so sure, :? mostly because of the pale chest. (I've ruled out juvenile black harrier because it doesn't appear to have the white wing flashes.) Could it perhaps rather be a black sparrowhawk — or even a blackchested snake eagle? :hmz:

Good first impression, arks! The typical barred, long-wedged tail virtually rules out all other posibilities. I think it is an immature Black Harrier with the black on the head and underwings still in a bit of a developmental stage.

Thanks to you both ... I'm sure you're right despite those features (white rump and wing flashes) that I didn't spot

Hi Richard,
This bird is a Black Harrier.

WoW! Cool photo, DD! Where did you see it?
(I've seen plenty, especially at WCNP, but never any good photo ops :( )

Saw a solitary one at WCNP over the Wader Bash weekend just completed.
