Saw this in a park in JHB. Help is appreciated. Is it perhaps a Streaky-headed Seedeater?

@Eugene123
Yes, your bird is a Streaky-headed Seedeater.

Eugene, I agree with deefstes' call, you are right on the Streaky-headed Seedeater.

GP, my first guess would be Streaky-headed Seedeater.

@ GP - yup, this one is indeed a Streaky-headed Seed-eater - can't see what else.

Identification Help - LBJs

Unread postby arks » Sun Nov 15, 2009 3:35 am

My early October visit to Bontebok NP brought me another collection of "mystery" birds. Here are a few I need help with :pray:

1. Is this perhaps a protea canary?

2. This one really has me stumped ...

Help will be, as always, greatly appreciated!

Hi Arks,

I've no clue on the first and last birds.

I'm still trying with these two, but failing miserably at the moment!

#1 looks quite good for Streaky-headed Seedeater (or the subspecies 'Pollen-fronted Seed-eater'). The angle of #2 makes it a bit tricky but I would not be surprised if this is also a SH Seedeater. Eyestripe, colour pattern and sturdy, flesh-coloured canaryish bill seem right for it.

Thanks, Joel! Now that I look (again) at the pix in my Newman's, I think that's much more likely than my guess, for habitat as well as markings. And it's a new tick for me :dance:
