Dear Birders,
Please take note that this topic is regularly “cleaned” by moving the posts of a specific bird that has been positively ID-ed to the specific bird topic for all to use when trying to ID their bird sightings, and also to read all the interesting discussions about the birds while ID-ing them.
Should it be impossible for anybody to give a positive ID for a bird for some reason or another, it will be taken out, because it serves no purpose.
Go to Index to Birds Index to Birds and find the topic of the bird you are looking for.

A good friend was in Central Namibia recently and saw this birdie. I thought it was a juvenile Karoo thrush, but maybe not.

Any ideas what it really is?

Any thoughts on these two (apologies for the poor quality photographs, these were taken at quite a distance and old age creates a few shakes).

Both photographs taken at Basotho Cultural Village, Golden Gate NP, In April of 2014.
The first: taken early-ish int he morning, was quite a vocal fellow...sat calling on the same pole for a good few minutes.

The second was quite a ways off, this bird was mostly on the rocks and ground/low bushes.

I have basically given up on making a positive ID....

#1 is a red-throated wryneck.
#2 is a weaver-type bird. Features are too obscured for me to get closer than that.

I must admit, the Wryneck was not one of the options I considered.. Amazing how obvious the right ID is once you get given the answer!

I was also leaning towards a Weaver for #2, as there were Southern Masked Weavers around, and the coloration/pattern on the back seems the same as most of the Cape and SM weavers in my garden. The bird appeared somewhat bigger than the Southern Masked Weaver, hence the uncertainty.

This one has me stumped. I have looked up what I thought it could be, and more, but am still at a loss.

My wife saw it yesterday at Strandfontein yesterday and it is in a photo sequence after a Cape robin chat, of which I thought it could be the juvenile or sub adult, but it seems not the case.

This is the only pic she has and if I was there I would have observed it and asked her to take more pics. Serves her right for going birding while I am earning my keep.

The bird is looking away, but you can see the white eyebrow. Also look at the tail, orange breast and orange vent on a grey belly. To my mind it is probably the same bird you have earlier in the sequence of shots...
