Another distant wader (with apologies for the poor quality of the much-cropped image). Is this one perhaps a marsh sandpiper? Seen at Mapungubwe in late October 2014.

Thanks Johan. Waders are still mostly a mystery to me, very hard to work out (and I expect that it doesn't help that I rarely/never see them close to)

This is the only photo I managed to get of this woodpecker ... so I'm not sure it's possible to ID. My guess is that it might be either a Bennett's or a goldentailed woodpecker?

The "clean" face would point towards Bennet's.

Another than I'm not sure about, is it perhaps a common cuckoo? Seen along the Luvhuvhu River in KNP on 1 November 2014.

This is a very difficult call to make at the best of times, arks.

After having looked at your bird pix for some time, I feel more comfortable with African cuckoo than common. The only feature I could find worth mentioning is the length of the white spots in the tail. Your bird in this respect shows a more extensive spot than one would expect seeing in the common cuckoo.

The best angle for these cuckoos is front- and side-on, showing especially the base of the bill where the extent of yellow; and undertail barring would be diagnostic.

Thanks Johan, I've again learned something useful.

I had a feeling that this one might be impossible to ID definitively. Unfortunately the bird never showed me its side or front view :wall: Either common or African cuckoo would be a new tick for me, but I don't think that I can honestly claim it on the basis of this sighting

I actually saw these gulls along the Rhine in Cologne, Germany, in February 2014, but I believe that they also occur in SA? Are they perhaps nonbreeding greyheaded gulls?

As far as I know, GHGs do not appear in Europe. This must be something different. Unfortunately your pix do not show the detail required for me to pursue an ID in my European references.

Thanks, Johan, 'twas worth a try! They were my first birdie pix with what was my then very new camera last February and they were quite far away, too, more than halfway across the Rhine from the quay where I was enjoying the river traffic.
