What features are most diagnostic?

This one has me stymied :wall: To me it looks most like a longbilled lark, but those don't occur in KTP :wall: Seen near Auchterlonie on 9 November 2012.

I must also apologise for the weird colour in these pix, as my camera setting was inadvertently (I have NO idea how this happened) changed to tungsten, so everything is blueish

@arks yours is a Spike-heeled Lark. Note the combination of a long, decurved bill, and short, white-tipped tail.

@huntsman, with regards to your Greenshank; it is much more pale, and grey than things like Wood and Common Sandpiper, and it has a broader bill than Marsh Sandpiper and it is slightly upturned.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks, Matt. I'd not realised that the spikeheeled lark had such a long bill.

Hi MattAxel

It does indeed, thanks!

The guide books give all the descriptions, but it's good to know what features will stand out in making an ID.

Yesterday I was helped to load photos. Today I'll be grateful for confirmation of names, for years I've called one of the mousebirds rosey faced- I now know its called redfaced. So I'm asking for help with these before I get into bad habits and learn the wrong name.

Spot on!

The new name for Heuglin's is White-browed Robin-chat.

Thanks WTM, I've a list of old and new names. I think I'll have to start the task of writing the new names into my old book.

I'm battling a bit with this one :wall: , is it perhaps a chat flycatcher? Seen along Darling Hills Road in mid-November 2012.
