Any idea on the bird we saw at S95 (I asked in a message above).

Going on with the awful pictures taken at a distance that make if hard to identify, these were seen flying over Letaba river January 9th 2011...

Any idea?

This one definitely has me puzzled :? I think that it must be a chat (or perhaps a flycatcher?), perhaps the sicklewinged chat or a very pale familiar chat? Seen in the Olifantsbos area of Cape Point on 19 June 2012.

Arks, I'll risk a guess at Familiar Chat.

Sickle-winged Chat has not yet been recorded around Cape Point.

Where as Familiar Chat is quite common around there.

I'd call it a misty chat based on the picture

But I think Dirk is correct.

The clue is that the 4 confusing species, karoo, familiar, trac trac and sickle winged can be sorted out as follows:

White on the tail= karoo (outer tail only) and tractrac (rump and outer tail)

Tail with rufus/orange/rusty pink = familiar (rump and outer tail) and sickle winged (entirely pale rust pink with black triangle on tip)

I would say that the rufus orange is just visible on the side of the tail.

Is this perchance a Cape reed-warbler? I saw it at Strandfontein (Cape Town) on 21 June 2012.
