A couple Woodpeckers from Marakele NP. Fairly sure on ID, but as I have been way off many times before, I thought I would just check before I tick them off in the book :D

14/Jul/12 at Bontle campsite at sunset, picking in the bark undisturbed by my presence. Forehead more red than in my sasol book, but pictures on this forum show the same. So with the plain throat it can only be Bennett's Woodpecker, or?

18/Aug/12 also at Bontle jumping around the three midday. Although not showing the malar stripe nearly as clear as in the book, guess it can only be the Cardinal Woodpecker. Had the idea it was bigger than the 14-15cm mentioned, but not always easy to judge

Thanks in advance, Michael

I took this pic near Letaba in April and thought it was a dusky lark, but a really nice South African chap from Worcester who I was chatting to at Pafuri and who seemed very knowledgeable was sure it's a groundscraper thrush.
Who's right? [I have a nasty feeling it's not going to be me.]

You are right, granjan... not all nice chaps from Worcester are what they seem to be...

Many thanks Johan. Just recently taken up the interest in birds. Currently going through photos made since arriving in RSA end 2010. Trying to ID what I have, although some I am not sure of, so probably going to bother you guys with a few more in the coming days, both LBjs, Raptors and general birds

Regards, Michael

Not sure whether this one is a dusky flycatcher or a spotted flycatcher, tho as the latter is a summer visitor, it's more likely the former? Seen in my garden in Darling on 28 May 2012.

Your logic works for me. The eye ring and throat pattern also are features that help to pin ADF

Thanks, Johan  First time I've seen this one in Darling.

Also wondering whether you saw my further question about those whimbrels?

Nope... I don't see any question I want to take a shot at at this link. I certainly cannot answer if your memory is flagging (misremember)

Thanks, JvR. A whimbrel would be a new tick for me, but I think that I must wait for a more 'definitive' view before adding it to my list. :D

Think I know the answer to this, but since they were standing there like a family I figured the two young Flamingos to the right were kiddies of the Lesser Flamingo to the left. But the bill is not black and it seems even immature Lesser Flamingos have the dark bill. So the immature ones are Greater Flamingos or are there exceptions to the bill tell-tell? Ndumo NP 06/Aug/11.
