Location: In the Place Of Gold...
Hottentot Teal
Gevlekte Eend
Anas hottentota

Habitat: Quiet inland waters with emergent and surface vegetation, vleis, marshes, sewage ponds and floodplains
Food: Seeds, fruits, crustaceans, insects, detritus in mud and molluscs in Natal (up to 95% of their diet in winter)
Habits: Quiet and unobstructive, in pairs or in small groups. Often sits quietly on water near overhanging plants or loafs on shoreline. Takes off reluctantly; flies with body at slightly upward angle and head characteristically raised until fully airborne. Forages by filter feeding with bill or head immersed and by up-ending.

This one has me quite puzzled ... my best guess is Hottentot teal? :hmz: Seen at Strandfontein (near Cape Town) on 26 October 2011.

These ducks have got me puzzled. I originally thought that they were southern pochards, but now, looking more closely at the head, I'm wondering whether they may be Hottentot teals -- even tho the pix in my field guide show a much paler body? :hmz: Seen at Strandfontein (Cape Town) on 8 December 2012.
