Thanks for continued support Ladybirder, philip1, anne-marie, caracal and Bushbuddies.

Heres one of the less colourful birds of Southern Africa, the Open-billed Stork. We watched them pull large and small snails from the river.

Camera Canon EOS-1D X
Exposure 0.001 sec (1/1250)
Aperture f/7.1
Focal Length 500 mm
ISO Speed 10000

Thanks Philip1. Yes they do look beat up and like scavengers.

Here is one of my all time favourites. A Spotted Eagle Owl in flight taken at Strandfonfein Waterworks near Cape Town This is the result of a 2 1/2 hour stake out while waiting for them to wake up, preen and move into the shade. All the time hoping for one to actually fly. A very rewarding morning. This was the first morning out with my new Nikon gear (D4 and 600mm f/4). You will see from the exif information that I favour underexposing to ensure I don't blow any whites and also to get a few extra f stops in shutter speed. The Nikon cameras allow you to do this with great results.

Camera Nikon D4
Exposure 1/4000 sec
Aperture f/8.0
Focal Length 600 mm
ISO Speed 560
Exposure Bias -2/3 EV

I had great fun in the West Coast National Park on the weekend. Here a Common Whimbrel took a crap from the shallow water, proceeded to remove the legs and then swallowed the rest.

This image was shot with the Nikon D800 and I cropped it 50%. So in fact the total focal length was around 1500mm. Not bad quality for that distance.

Camera Nikon D800
Exposure 1/3200 sec
Aperture f/6.7
Focal Length 1000 mm
ISO Speed 400
Exposure Bias -1 EV

We have large numbers of Flamingos in the Western Cape t the moment and this is certainly the case in the West Coast National Park. I really enjoy this image of the 3 Flamingos coming together.
