Seeing as I have two of the Best Bird Brains in the forum business stumped on this one I was wondering if anyone can help me Id this eagle ...

Judging it's size when I took the photo we estimated it at 35 - 40 cm tall..

Thanks

I had a look in my "Raptor Identification Guide for southern Africa" and will have to change my opinion of yesterday and say this is the Light form of an immature Black-breasted Snake-eagle. I've still not receive a reply from my friend to whom I've emailed the photo so will let you know what he says

Remember it is not a budgie but an eagle that grows up to be 63-68cm tall and an immature bird is well on its way to full size so the bird in your photo may even be more than 35cm

Definitely Juv Black-breasted Snake Eagle. On top of the evidence already expertly given, the bill is lighter & the eye more 'sinister' (the BBSE has a lower eye-brow than the Brown, giving it a kind of scowl in most lighting conditions.

Must be a Snake-eagle with that yellow eye and horn-coloured bill.

I read in my Sasol book about the line reaching from the bottom of the eye to the end...not sure where it starts or where it stops,,,,

1st pic is a Black-chested Snake-eagle. You'll notice the large, bright yellow eyes. Also have a look at the legs and you'll notice that they are bare, no feathers on the bottom part of the leg which would be covered in feathers in all true eagles like Martial, Crown etc. Have a look at the colour and you'll see that the legs are white while both the two you mentioned have got yellow legs.

Hi MGoddard,

Snake-eagles differ from other Eagles in three main features:
1. Their legs are bare.
2. Their eyes are bright yellow
3. Their heads are quite big and round

Based on this it is easy to see that your bird is a Snake-eagle.

Once you know that the first one is a Snake-eagle it's no challenge at all to identify it down to species level. In fact, I'll leave that to you

I am thinking more of Black-chested Snake-Eagle. Large yellow eye, bright white underparts (no streaking), round head and no feathers on lower legs would clinch that one for me.

The tarsus (lower legs) of No 1 is bare therefor not African Hawk-eagle which has feathered legs. Also no streaks on the underparts.

Bare legs
Yellow eyes
White belly with no streaks
Overall black

I will say (and now see JoelR already said it) Black-chested (Black-breasted) Snake-eagle.
