African Broardbill

12-14cm; 18-27g A Dumpy, phlegmatic flycatcher-like bird with heavily streaked underparts. Male has blackish cap; female is duller with a dark brown cap. Juv. is buffy and less streaked above.

Pic taken in Riverine Forest - Poor quality but the only one I have.

This bird is part of the Non-Vocal birds with him being the only example in SA. He does not call and use song such as other birds but rather has special designed wings, that are hardened allowing him to make "Vrrrrrr" sound when he flies up into the air, doing an almost somersault then landing on his perch again. This is how this bird "calls" if you may :wink:

This birds Preferred habitat is Forest, Both Sand and Dune Forest as well as riverine forest up into Mozambique. A smallish bird, hard to photograph let alone find.

Not wanting to risk disturbance of the nest, where this bird was sitting on chicks, we decided to rather take long range shots than opting for quality.
