I blame my poor score of 3 out of 10 to birds not being able to read, and my 4th Edition Roberts with a recommended retail price of R12.00. Must be outdated........

For number 5 in Challenge #22 I put Vanga Flycatcher - as that is what it is called in Sasol 4th edition (it puts Black and White Shrike Flycatcher in brackets). In other books it is called Black and White Flycatcher. In all cases it is Bias musicus

Yes, don't worry, I do award points for any of the known names of the birds so you will have received your point for the Vanga Flycatcher.

I also had a lousy score (4/10) for #22, so back to the drawing board!!

My very old versions of Roberts & Newman's don't list a barn swallow, and no doubt it has a different name today. Can anybody let me know the latin name?

Thanks
Pawps

Thanks Shushin, I've checked both my (very old) Roberts & Newmans and both have Hirundo rustica as a European swallow. Both books have the adult bird with a red-orange throat, and juvenile with a buffish or whitrish throat.

My SO has suggested I invest in an edition that was't printed in 1983 Newmans (first edition) or 1984 Roberts!!

cheers
Pawps

So presumably this is a young barn swallow? I had to go to Roberts on-line version to check. I got it wrong too! :(
As with the black and white flycatcher, which doesn't appear in Sasol under flycatchers but elsewhere, it's all very confusing. :wall: Even worse if you don't have access to on-line versions!
I suppose that's why we do the challenge!

In my Sasol (2002) the only bird book that I have, the swallow is named as barn (European) swallow and the black and white flycatcher is under flycatchers :hmz: Apart from bird books there are such an amount of excellent bird sites on the Internet, that once you have the family right, it is just a question of hard work :rtm:

Micetta - in Sasol 4th Edition (2011) it's under Wattle-eyes and Allies as the Vanga (Black and white Shrike) Flycatcher. Very confusing!
