Cinderella Waxbill Estrilda thomensis
Habitat: We found them in Southern Africa along the Cunene valley in Northern Namibia. This is arid dry country with riverine woodland. We also found them next to the typical rocky watercourses as described in “Roberts Birds” as well as away from the river in tall Mopani woodland.

Upper parts are a lighter grey above than the dark grey of Grey Waxbill, and they also have the black lores extending behind the eye.
Upper and under tail coverts are blackish.
Rump is crimson, extending onto the base of the black tail.
Flanks to lower flanks crimson red, while Grey has no crimson on flanks.
Bill is pinkish with a dark tip, while Grey has a only dark bill.Image

Hi Lizet thanx for the post...confirms when I searched endlessly for 2 days along the Cunene West of Ruacana that I was doing the right thing. No luck though!

Yeah I dipped there as well. I love it there and will return one day for the CW!

I must confess it is a very difficult bird to see if you like to look for them on your own!
When we first went to the Cunene to look for them in 1998 we spent 3 days searching and only saw one pair. In 2006 we went back to photograph them and spend 4 days and many hours (sitting quietly on one spot) to get decent photos. They are not abundant and very shy....
