Nightjar, Swamp

Swamp Nightjar Caprimulgus natalensis

Sexes-Similar. Lacks distinctive features but has prminent white eyebrows.
Male-More Conspicous white outer tail feathers than Square tailed nightjar.
Female-wing spots and outer tail feathers buff.
Juv- Resembles female but more spotted.
Status- uncommon resident regarded as vulnerable, largly sedentery.
Habitat- Grassland adjoining swamps, lagoons and rivers.
Food- Insects, especially beetles.
Call- Slow repetitive chok-chok-chok-chok...
Breeding- Monogamous. Eggs laidon ground between grass tufts.
Other Names- Natal Nightjar, Natalse Naguil.

I know one of my freinds flushed one of these birds out when he went on a trip to the KZN coast.....lucky chap! :slap:

Took this picture of one at the Amatikulu Nature Reserve in Zululand some years back. Sorry for the stoopid frames and borders. I did this back in the days when I still thought that was cool :redface:

Picture was taken with a Nikon CoolPix 995 compact digital camera through Leica 8x50 binoculars. I actually miss that CoolPix camera.
