The Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Circaetus fasciolatus, is a pooly known raptor that inhabits the coastal and adjacent inland forests of Natal, north of the Tugela River, usually within 20 – 40 km of the coast.

The resident South African population is estimated to be around 40 pairs which make it one of the scarcest birds in South Africa. To top it all, they are shy birds that are not often seen aloft as they prefer a secluded perch along forest edges from which they quietly hunt small animals like snakes, lizards, insects, mice and amphibians.

Thanks Lizet and anne-marie. After posting these shots I remembered another... I had to go scrounging through my archives, but eventually found it.

The banded tail is clearly evident in this shot of the eagle’s back – the feature for which it was named…
