Yeah, the Grey-hooded Kingfisher is a real special bird. It certainly is one of the contenders for my favourite Kingfisher, but then every time I see a Pygmy Kingfisher I have to re-evaluate, only to do so again every time I see a Half-collared Kingfisher.

Here's a pic of a juvenile I photographed at Mapungubwe some time back. You will notice the mottling on the chest and the chestnut colouration on the face - as well as the black blotches on the bill.

We were so happy to find this Immature Grey-Headed Kingfisher in Kruger earlier this year. :D

Very nice photo. :clap:

It is as far as I know, not a common resident in Kruger, usually between September and April, if you are lucky mind you.

Very well spotted, would love to mark him off our list but his space is still vacent.
