September, 2009 we saw this one and one other near the Nkumbe View site on the H10.

They were patrolling a recently burned area looking for a bite to eat.

Havent seen any on the Nossob cam for a while..

I found this

Quote:
The four large vultures decreased dramatically (98%) outside protected areas. The Hooded Vulture also collapsed over wide regions, but survived locally. Medium-size and large eagles, and the Secretary Bird, similarly declined >90% outside, but not inside, national parks, where woodland species also reach their highest frequency.

Interseting as people have commented that populations inside the parks have also seemed to decrease.

This is just alarming.

Quote:
Threats
Although its population is distributed over a vast area covering more than 15 million square kilometres, the secretarybird is generally in decline, and is thought to have completely disappeared from West Africa within the last 30 years (1) (2) (5). This species is increasingly threatened by the expansion of human populations, and the associated spread of cultivation and urbanisation (1) (2). On a smaller scale, some populations of the secretarybird are at risk from hunting and persecution, with several individuals found poisoned or injured in South Africa in recent years (5).

This video was made during a trip to the Kruger National Park. The Secretary Bird walks across the veld and stamp the ground with its strong legs looking for small animals or insects. This bird was found in the grasslands north of Satara.

According to Roberts VII, there are an estimate of 250 Secretary Birds in the Kruger National Park.

One of my best nature memories, is seeing a secretary bird attacking and killing a small snake. It is incredible how hard they can hit with those long legs of theirs. The sound could be clearly heard some 10 meters away.

We've been lucky with Secretary Bird sightings in KNP - but our best sightings were, of course, in KTP! Here's one of the pic's:

Very nice sighting Leeukos. I have only had 1 sighting of a Secretary bird in KNP. This was in Dec and north of Mopani off the S 144 and it was on the top of a tree
