Yellow-billed Egret, Egretta intermedia, is a resident breeder from east Africa across tropical southern Asia to Australia, not particularly common in South Africa. This species, as its scientific name implies, is intermediate in size between the Great Egret and smaller white egrets like the Little Egret and Cattle Egret. It is about 90 cm tall with all-white plumage. The legs and feet will always be black below the tibio-tarsal joint and from the tibio-tarsal joint upwards yellow when not breeding to reddish when breeding. Care should be taken when looking for the colour of the tibia as it can be amazingly difficult to see in the field. Breeding birds may have an orange-red bill, greenish yellow gape skin and loose filamentous plumes on their breast and back. The sexes are similar.

The Intermediate Egret stalks its prey methodically in shallow coastal or fresh water, including flooded fields, often sitting patiently in ambush. It eats fish, amphibians crustaceans and insects.

It often nests in colonies with other herons, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. Two to five eggs are laid.

Great Egret? A bit confused because the legs don't appear to be completely black?
