I need some help with this bird please. Photo was taken in Central Kalahari game reserve in June 09. It was at Piper pan. I think it is a chat flycatcher but some friends say karoo chat. To me the range is not correct for the latter but more likely for the former. Thanks.

Hi Jnaflwr,

This bird I cannot decide between Chat Flycatcher or Pale flycatcher. Do you remember if the bird was Thrush sized or smaller? Large = Chat, small = Pale. The locality seems to be on the border of both their ranges according to Sasol, but don't know how accurate these maps are?

Hi Barcud, I would say it was more thrush size. Thank you so much for the ID help.

Larks continue to stump me :wall: Any chance that this might be a spikeheeled lark?

My second guess would be fawncoloured, but while photos can be deceiving (and this bird was very far away, hence a very cropped image), the bill doesn't look thick enough for fawncoloured :hmz:

Seen in KTP on 22 February 2010.

Definately not a lark...looks quite flycactcher/chat like, will have to have a better look later after my exam...

Thanks, RJ, I hope your exam went well? Here's a tighter crop of the LBJ ...

I'm thinking now that it's likely just a familiar chat — or a chat flycatcher? (how does one tell these two apart?!?) Except that the black line through the eye puzzles me. From the pix in my Newman's it looks most like a pale or mousecoloured flycatcher, but that bird isn't supposed to occur in KTP :hmz: :wall:

Arks, your bird appears to be a Chat Flycactcher, it is too bulky and has the wrong shape and giss for a familiar chat, thanks for the wishes, and the enlarged image

Thanks for the ID and the reasoning. I usually just assume familiar chat, while always wondering whether I'm wrong  There's not much difference in the illustrations in my Newman's and I've not had sufficient opportunity to observe either at length, which might help me to recognise the differences.

Good luck with the rest of your exams — or are you done for now?

Pleasure Arks, the more time spent with a bird, the easier IDing is later in life :D

I've still got 6 exams to go, the next is on Saturay afternoon! Thanks for the luck!

To continue with my "challenges" in attempting to distinguish between the chat flycatcher and the familiar chat, more birds seen in KTP in February.

This I'm thinking is a chat flycatcher, possibly a juvenile just molting from its spotty juvenile plummage?
