Identification Help - LBJs

Unread postby arks » Sun Nov 22, 2009 6:05 am

Two more that have me puzzled, both seen at Bontebok NP on 3 October 2009.

This one I really haven't a clue. I think it's likely a cisticola? But I can't seem to find one with this white breast and rufous crown ... ?

Any help pointing me to clues that I'm missing will be, as always, greatly appreciated  :D

Hi Arks,

I think both birds are Cisticola's. I'll try to narrow it down, but these things drive me up the wall!

This bird looks to have a well marked back? This, along with the red head, plain underparts and long tail points to this being a Levaillant's.

My ID of this bird may be wrong, so confirmation by someone more experienced would be appreciated, but hope this helps.

Hi RJ, thanks for pursuing these. Both were seen quite close to the Breede River — the road parrallels the river and these were both seen on the farther side of the road. So plenty of water nearby, altho not a dam or a vlei

I am by no means an expert (or even a beginner), but I would guess Levaillant's Cisticola?

Hi Lion Cub - Can you let us know where the pics were taken, as the only clue we have is your signature "Sharks forever", which probably means you are in Gauteng?

Cheers

Niall.

OK, then it narrows it down a bit. The Cisticola looks like Levaillants, but dependant on habitat you would have to consider Rufous winged, and Wailing. The belly looks very white which would point more towards Levaillants.

Cheers

Hi Arks and Joshilewis

My apologies - I am a memeber of Tinypics, Arks, but just not a very bright one it seems! (I somehow deleted the photos shortly after psoting them). And this morning seem to have resizing trouble, but hopefully all works now.

As I said in my original post, my guess was a Levaiiliant's Cisticola based on what I read in Roberts but I could very easily be wrong. The bird just popped up while I was photographing Cormorants.

Many thnaks to you experienced birders for your patience. It is much appreicated.

Regards
Pete
