We were fortunate to have seen quite a few Martial Eagles on our recent trip to Kruger.
This fellow posed nicely for us.

On 12 November while driving the H1-6 just a few km south of Shingwedzi I turned off the road on one of the little pull off loops. While stopped we noticed something move on the ground and realized it was a Martial Eagle.

On closer view, we realized that the Eagle was clutching a recently killed Egyptian Goose. The goose was too large for the Martial Eagle to fly off with, so as we watched, he proceeded to hop and drag the goose across the ground.

While dragging to Goose, the Eagle would stop and call out. As if calling a mate or Fledglings. No other Martial arrived, and our new friend continued hopping and dragging the goose across the ground.

Soon he got near the base of a large tree and above we heard another Eagle call, this time it was a Fish Eagle and as it passed overhead the Martial spread it's wings and shielded the goose from the Eagle flying overhead.

After deciding his prize was safe, he turned and started pulling at it finally eating.

This was one of the most exciting raptor sightings that we have had and I wanted to share it with my fellow forumites.
